Al Gore's Climate Reality Leadership Corps was a game changer. A life changer really.
It's taken me a few days to come back down to Earth and process my thoughts.
When I first watched An Inconvenient Truth it saddened and angered me. I knew we had to do so much more, or future generations would pay for our recklessness.
Seeing Al Gore deliver his 2 hour, 500+ slide presentation was moving and powerful.
The first hour was a heartbreaking look at where we are now. Seeing record breaking hurricane, after 1-in-1000 year hurricane, after wildfire, after devastating flood felt apocalyptic.
It connected the dots that this is no longer a problem to be inherited by our children. It is already happening. We have crossed the line of irreparable damage. A Delaware-sized iceberg has broken off Antarctica. It's 350m thick, a trillion tones, and it's not coming back. Terrified? Me too
But just as our last fragment of hope crossed the line of irreparable damage, Al brought us back with a good measure of Southern charm, and news of huge efforts that are happening right now and lined up for the near future.
We will drip feed these incredible initiatives to you, but here's my absolute favourite win... When America pulled out of the Paris Agreement, everyone else didn't throw in the towel. They doubled their efforts. In a collective "fuck you" to Trump, US states, cities, colleges & businesses declared "WE ARE STILL IN". Their efforts have ensured that America is on track to exceed their Paris Agreement commitments. Isn't it funny how spite can bring out the best in people? ? Also, America can't officially pull out until 4 days after their next general election. How d'ya like them apples Donald?
So yes, we have crossed a line. But the future is still in our hands. We can decide the extent, and the timeline of damage we cause.
We can push for a future where we nurture & protect our home. We can fight like our World depends on it I don't know about you, but I'm keen to crack on right away We were told to think of our why. Why is this so important to you? Why is this so urgent for you? I don't have a personal anecdote or reason. It just feels pretty bloody important. So the why becomes "OF COURSE". Of course this is important! Of course this is urgent! There's easily 10 actions we can each take over the next 12 months (p.s you don't need to wait for January for resolutions... ?) What are yours? #activated #leadonclimate #novemberresolutions
